Sugarland Studios is offering 3 class-types this fall – Pottery Wheel classes for beginners through intermediate potters, our signature Pottery with Alpacas where you will create alongside friendly alpacas, and our new Teen Tuesday Clay Club for ages 12-17. There is something fun for everyone to participate in!
8-Week Pottery Wheel Class Series
Dive into the art of wheel throwing in this hands-on, 8-week pottery course. You’ll learn the full process from start to finish — how to center clay, create height and form, refine your pieces through trimming, and finish them with beautiful glazes. Perfect for beginners and those looking to improve their skills, these classes will guide you through each stage of creating your own functional and decorative pottery
Those who have pottery experience will focus on refining technique and expanding skills on the wheel. Students will work on creating more consistent forms, increasing height and control, improving shape and proportion, and learning advanced trimming and finishing techniques. The course also explores intentional form development, problem-solving at the wheel, and glazing approaches to elevate finished pieces.
Teen Clay Club
Looking for a creative space where teens can unplug, make something amazing, and connect with others who love art? Teen Clay Club at Sugarland Studios is designed just for ages 12–17—whether you’re brand new to clay or already have experience.
Students will explore both pottery wheel throwing and handbuilding, learning new techniques while creating functional pottery, sculptures, and unique artistic pieces. Throughout the session, they’ll build confidence, develop technical skills, and discover their own creative style in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
Our studio is a welcoming place where teens are free to experiment, make mistakes, and celebrate their successes. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new while having fun with fellow young artists.
In this class, students will:
- Learn both pottery wheel and handbuilding techniques
- Explore glazing, texture, carving, and surface decoration
- Create functional pottery and artistic sculptures
- Build confidence through creative expression
- Enjoy a supportive, inspiring community designed specifically for teens
All clay, glazes, firing, and tools are included—just bring your creativity and clothes you don’t mind getting a little muddy!
Pottery with Alpacas
Sugarland Studios’ signature experience! Pottery with Alpacas is a relaxed 4-week evening series where creativity meets the calm of the pasture. Join us Friday evenings from 5-7pm to hand build both functional and decorative pieces, surrounded by our curious alpacas and the beauty of the farm. We’ll be outside in our pasture, moving into the studio if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
Weeks 1–3 focus on creating your vessels, and week 4 is dedicated to painting and glazing. Pieces will be fired and ready to take home after the session. Whether you’re new to clay or experienced, this is a chance to slow down, get inspired, and create something truly unique outdoors.
Fridays, September 4, 11, 18, and 25th from 5-7pm
What is throwing pottery on the wheel?
Wheel throwing is the process of shaping clay on a rotating wheel to create functional forms—think bowls, cups, and vases. You’ll learn the core steps: wedging (preparing the clay), centering (aligning it on the wheel), opening and pulling walls (building height and shape), then trimming to refine the foot. In later weeks, you’ll explore simple surface techniques and glazing. It’s hands-on, a little messy, and incredibly satisfying as the clay responds to your touch.
We look forward to welcoming you at our pottery studio located in the heart of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve!
