For more than 30 years, clay has been a constant source of creativity, experimentation, and discovery for Heather O’Halloran.
Her work is rooted in wheel-thrown forms, often transformed beyond the traditional vessel through altered shapes, surface treatments, and unexpected finishing techniques. She is particularly drawn to Raku firing—an unpredictable and elemental process where fire, smoke, glaze, and atmosphere become collaborators in the finished piece.
For Heather, part of the magic of ceramics is that there is always something new to explore. A familiar form can take an entirely different direction through texture, movement, glaze, or firing. That sense of possibility keeps her experimenting with new techniques and finding fresh ways to work with clay, even after three decades at the wheel.

Heather enjoys sharing the experience she has gained over 30 years while giving students the freedom to develop their own creative voices. Classes are welcoming, hands-on, and intentionally small, with plenty of individual guidance. Whether someone is touching clay for the first time or looking to develop more advanced skills, the goal isn’t simply to make a perfect pot—it’s to experiment, learn, create, and enjoy the process.
Sugarland Studios is both Heather’s working ceramic studio and a place where others are invited to become part of a creative community built around clay.Sugarland Studios is a friendly neighborhood pottery studio offering ceramics classes in Poolesville, MD—right in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. We help first-timers and returning makers discover the joy of clay through wheel throwing, handbuilding, and playful workshops on our microfarm (yes, you will see alpacas, horses, and curious chickens).

Sugarland Studios was created as a place where people slow down, try something with their hands, and leave a little happier. Location & Access
We’re on a microfarm in Poolesville, Maryland with on-site parking. The studio is accessed with a set of stairs. Email us about any access needs and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
